The Parish Church of St Michael in Sostanj has a modern design that combines the old and the new. It was built between 1973 and 1990, when it was consecrated. It stands in an area where the Church of St Michael in Druzmirje previously stood, demolished due to ground subsidence above the Velenje coal mine. The new building, designed by the architect Adi Miklavc, is based on a reinforced concrete structure and features modern architecture with carefully chosen elements, such as the colourful stained-glass windows, the work of the artist Joze Zel, which depict biblical scenes.
The church also has some historical elements transferred from the old church. Among them are the Baroque altar of St Michael from 1748 and a fresco of the Archangel Michael. In the choir loft there is a new organ with 21 stops, for which metal pipes from the old parish church were used. Inside you will find a unique sacrificial altar with a motif of a grapevine and a sower.
The surroundings of the church are beautifully landscaped, while the interior offers modern solutions such as movable walls and innovative lighting, which allow the space to be adapted to needs. A visit to the church attracts numerous day-trippers and pilgrims, which shows its cultural and spiritual significance for the local community
