Hekenberg Castle (Stopnik) – A historical gem above the Lower Savinjska Valley

Hekenberg Castle, also known as Stopnik Castle or White Castle, lies above the Lower Savinjska Valley and proudly raises its silhouette above the forested landscape near Vransko. Its strategic position below the ridge of the Čret upland ensured it security and control over the surrounding territory in the past.

Historical significance of the castle

The first written mention of the castle dates back to 1188, which means it is considered one of the oldest castles in this area. It was built by the Hackenberg knights, who resided here until the first half of the 14th century. At that time the castle played an important role, as it also housed the provincial court.

After the Hackenberg knights, the castle changed owners several times. In 1442 it was bought from Neža of Stubenberg for 1,300 pounds by the famous Count of Celje Frederick. With the demise of the Counts of Celje, the castle passed into the ownership of the sovereign prince and was given to Hans Safner to manage.

Attacks and decline of the castle

In the 17th century the castle suffered one of its heaviest blows. In 1635, during a peasant revolt, it was attacked and plundered by rebellious peasants. The then owner, Felix Baron von Schrottenbach, restored the castle, but in 1794 the family sold the estate to Simon Alexander.

After 1800 the new owners abandoned the castle and moved to the newly built Marof manor, which they erected at the foot of the castle hill. Thus Stopnik Castle began to decay, and to this day only ruins have survived.

Legends and mysteries

There are several theories as to why the owners abandoned the castle and built a new manor. One explanation is that the old castle was uncomfortable to live in, and another says that a **fear of the castle** circulated among the people. According to folk tradition, the ghosts of former inhabitants are said to haunt it.
