The Church of Saint James, also known by the name Jakec, is an excursion spot for the people of Velenje. It stands on the Gradišče hill at an elevation of 528 m, on the southern edge of the Saleska Valley, which shows two faces:
- on the northern side, above the Gorenje factory, wooded
- and on the southern side settled and covered in vineyards and orchards.
The Church of Saint James is the best-preserved monument of Romanesque architecture in the Saleska Valley, and at the same time one of the smallest churches in the Saleska Valley.
The Church of Saint James from 1583 stands on a panoramic hill and, judging by its appearance, is considered the oldest church in the Saleska Valley. Both its nave and presbytery are still Romanesque and represent the only surviving part of the medieval Lilienberg castle. In addition to the marked trail, the church can also be reached by road through Podkraj. From the church there is a lovely view of Velenje and the surrounding hills.
You can expect a beautiful view of the nearby surroundings, and in good visibility you can also see Kum (1220 m) to the south and the Koralpe/Golica to the north.
Access: From Stari Velenje, from the Hostage Monument, then right and uphill along the northern slope (40 minutes' walk) or through Podkraj and Zabrdo along the southern side (45 minutes' walk).
