Šalek Castle stands on a steep hill above the level area of the Šalek settlement, after which the entire Saleska Valley is also named, near the municipality of Velenje. It was abandoned in the 18th century. The tower that still stands today is the oldest part of the castle and has a triangular ground plan, which is a unique feature in Slovenia and Europe.
The ruins of Šalek Castle in Velenje represent an important part of the historical and cultural heritage of the region. These are the remains of a former castle that was built in the 12th century and played a key role in the region in the past. Nevertheless, only the ruins are preserved today, which still bear witness to the former grandeur of this historical monument.
The area of the ruins is a popular tourist spot that attracts both local residents and tourists. In addition, it offers visitors an insight into history and architecture and provides wonderful views of the surroundings, allowing for pleasant walks and exploration.
Although the ruins of Šalek Castle are only a shadow of their former grandeur, they still represent an important cultural monument that allows visitors to immerse themselves in the history of this part of Slovenia.
