Brinjeva gora above Zreče

Brinjeva gora above Zreče Brinjeva gora above Zreče is a 630-meter-high elevation, part of the Tertiary hill country of the sub-Pohorje portion of the Dravinja Hills, as well as an archaeological site and a pilgrimage route near Zreče.

Brinjeva gora is among the first hilltop settlements and existed throughout the entire late Stone Age, outliving many lowland settlements. Archaeological excavations in the early 1960s uncovered numerous ancient finds that point to a vibrant life already in the distant past, from 3 to 5 thousand years before our era. An exhibition about the finds at Brinjeva gora is temporarily set up in the lobby of the Planja hotel on Rogla. The archaeological excavations, which under the leadership of the archaeologist Stanko Pahič lasted as long as 11 years, uncovered a series of archaeological sites from various prehistoric and historical periods; from the oldest Copper Age settlement remains in Brezje and Zreče, Pavlak's cave with prehistoric pottery in Dobrava, the Bronze Age, urnfield as well as ancient and late antique settlements on Brinjeva gora with a Bronze Age tumulus, an urnfield, Roman-era tumuli and skeletal late antique and Slavic graves on its outskirts. The natural conditions of this area are also attested by the later medieval settlements and the oldest preserved buildings and churches. From the Middle Ages there are also remains of castles that once stood in the area of Zreče, namely the castles Freudenberg on Brinjeva gora as well as Jamnik (Holenstein) and Lušperk (Luschberg) in Zreče. Brinjeva gora is also one of the most visited hills right above Zreče, and several walking trails, a well-built road and also a mountaineering climbing route, also called the »Boštjan Route«, lead there.
