Vrbovec Castle, located at the confluence of the Dreta and Savinja rivers in Nazarje, has a rich history dating back to the 12th century. Originally known as Altenburg, it served as a centre for the control of estates and later passed into the ownership of various feudal families.
The castle, in its present appearance from the 15th century, changed owners several times, among them the Patriarchs of Aquileia, the Counts of Celje and the Habsburgs, until it was acquired by the Ljubljana diocese in 1615. During the Second World War the castle was burned down and was later restored with the aim of preserving its cultural heritage.
Today, Vrbovec Castle hosts various institutions and activities. It houses the administrative offices of the Municipality of Nazarje, private companies, forestry organisations, a wedding hall and an inn. In addition, the castle is home to the Museum of Forestry and Wood Industry, which gives visitors insight into the area's rich timber heritage.
