The Gallows in Hom

 The Gallows in Hom

The gallows in Hom are the only preserved device of their kind in Slovenia. As far back as a century ago, the bishops of Ljubljana had their summer residence in Gornji Grad. Between 1752 and 1756 they built a mighty Baroque church there, and thanks to them the gallows still stand in the forest below Hom, on a small hill between the hamlet of Radmirje and Gornji Grad. They were intended for the final re-education of criminals. These are the only existing gallows in Slovenia. They consist of three L-shaped pillars. The pillars are six metres high each and connected to one another by wooden poles. No one was ever actually hanged on the gallows – their main purpose was apparently intimidation by the Ljubljana bishopric, which once held the right of capital justice in these parts.

Parking is available by the chapel, along the Radmirje – Gornji Grad road (the turn-off for the footpath is 100 metres along the main road in the direction of Radmirje).
