Vrbovec Museum - Museum of Forestry and Woodworking

Vrbovec Museum - Museum of Forestry and Woodworking

The Vrbovec Museum in Nazarje is located in Vrbovec Castle, which is more than 750 years old, at the confluence of the Savinja and Dreta rivers. The museum sheds light on the rich heritage of forestry and woodworking, which has been present in the Savinja Valley for centuries.

The Savinja Valley is known for its forests and its tradition of using wood. The Solčava yew is considered one of the oldest trees in Slovenia, and the Larch at Klemenča jama, the largest larch in our country, is also significant. The inhabitants of the valley continue to care for the preservation of this rich woodworking heritage today.

The Vrbovec Museum offers an interesting and educational experience for visitors of all ages, and is especially suitable for children and school groups. The exhibited collections include a presentation of:

  • the way of life and work of charcoal burners, carters, raftsmen, sawyers, joiners and carpenters;
  • the particularities of Slovenian forests and forests elsewhere in the world;
  • a depiction of wood-processing procedures, including felling, log chutes, log floating, cableways, and joinery and carpentry techniques.

The exhibition is enlivened by interactive points where visitors can test their knowledge of forestry and woodworking and try their hand at thinking games with wooden props.
