Chapel on the Molička Mountain Pasture

Chapel on the Molička Mountain Pasture

The Chapel of St Cyril and Methodius is set on the Molička mountain pasture at an altitude of 1780 m. It was built in 1898 and at the time of its construction was the highest-lying chapel in Slovenia.

The first Slovenian mountain hut in the Savinja Alps was built in 1894 on the Molička mountain pasture, at the initiative of Fran Kocbek, then the head teacher in Gornji Grad. The money for its construction was collected through voluntary contributions. On the proposal of Anton Aškerc it was named Kocbek's hut, and it opened just one month after Orožen's hut on Črna Prst, the first Slovenian mountain hut.

Three years later the Savinja branch of the SPD built the Chapel of St Cyril and Methodius, but over the years neither building fared particularly well. The mountain hut fell into disrepair over the years until it collapsed completely, and the chapel was destroyed in the 1950s by a mysterious landslide; it is only thanks to the dedicated work of the locals that the chapel was rebuilt in 1989.

The Molička mountain pasture (locally known as Molička peč) is today a popular mountain spot, where in the summer months the Holy Mass is also occasionally celebrated in the chapel.
