Gornji Grad Cathedral – Church of Sts. Hermagoras and Fortunatus

Gornji Grad Cathedral – Church of Sts. Hermagoras and Fortunatus

If you enjoy exploring cultural, sacred and historical heritage, then the Gornji Grad Cathedral must not be missing from your list, the largest and architecturally most important Baroque building in Slovenia, the Church of Sts. Hermagoras and Fortunatus, which has a rich history.

The cathedral, which gives Gornji Grad a mighty air, was built between 1752 and 1761 on the orders of the Ljubljana prince-bishop Ernest Attems. He decided on the dimensions of the cathedral mainly because of a dispute with the citizens of Ljubljana. Many masters, craftsmen and farmers of the Gornji Grad estate took part in its construction.

The church, which is built in the Baroque style, replaced a Benedictine monastery from the 12th century. Notable features include:

  • the dynamic facade with stone statues,
  • precious paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries,
  • the tombstones of the Ljubljana bishops.

The church is 58.5 m long, 28.6 m wide and 62 m high. The parish centre is regularly maintained and accessible.
