The site where the sanctuary still stands today served as a place of worship for the pagans, as well as for the Slavs. The Christian sanctuary is first mentioned in the Gornji Grad land register in 1426. During the reconstruction in 1855, the position of the sanctuary and the building style were changed - Neo-Romanesque. In 1864 the right side chapel was added; the one on the left side was added later, most likely during the restoration of the church after the earthquake of 1895, and the sanctuary remains in this state to this day. The bell tower is still the original, which is why it is also built in an east – west direction, while the church is somewhat off this direction. The bells were cast in the Ljubljana foundry – Zaharija Raidt. The smallest bell was cast in 1728, and the larger one in 1750; these were taken by the war. It became a parish in 1906.
Jesus went up the mountain, sat down and began to teach. The church emphasises the teaching office of Jesus's successor, the apostle Peter, the first pope, and all his successors. The pope still sits today when he preaches. We celebrate him on 22 February – and the procession takes place on the feast of the apostles Peter and Paul.
