The tunnel near Mislinja, located approximately 100 metres before the former Mislinja railway station, is part of the historic Velenje–Dravograd railway line. This line was known for its scenic route and impressive engineering achievements, among which the tunnel near Mislinja was one of the most interesting. The Mislinja railway station, which lay at an altitude of 598 metres, was the highest-lying station in the former Yugoslavia, which gives the tunnel special historical significance as part of this unique railway route.
